What Is ATEX?

The specific European Directives are -

ATEX 137 Directive 1999/92/EC

(The protection of workers from potentially explosive atmospheres)

This directive makes it a legal requirement for employers to assess for an explosion risk and classify operational areas accordingly.

ATEX Directive 94/9/EC

(Equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres) This directive makes it a legal requirement that once an area has been classified as pontenially explosive only Electrical / Mechanical equipment that has been formally certified can be used within it.
